0:00 There's a number of causes for turbochargers failing and one of them is actually the process of installing a new turbocharger. Now, Terrain Tamer has come up with an extensive and comprehensive turbocharger kit that will give you the confidence in changing out the turbochargers and ensuring you don't have warranty comebacks.
0:19 When a Turbocharger is being changed by a mechanic, oftentimes this oil supply line needs to be moved out of the way and obviously being a flexible line that makes perfect sense. Because the line's exposed to the heat of the exhaust. the oil flowing up through here can build up coking on the inside of the line; therefore, if you move the line, you disrupt that coke and when you start your engine, that can then travel into the bearings of the turbocharger and on your test drive, or soon thereafter you, wind up destroying your brand new turbocharger. Not what you want to have happen; therefore, Terrain Tamer Supply a brand new oil supply line. As an interesting aside - with the five-cylinder Ford Rangers, in their number one bearing journal, there is a filter in the supply line to the turbocharger and to the timing chain gears. If that filter clogs up, you can have common turbocharger and timing chain failures.
1:17 The other area of concern is obviously the air filtration side. Now, this can cause a number of issues. If it allows dust particles either through the filter or bypassing the filter, those dust particles impacting on the compressor wheel can obviously cause abrasion damage. The other concern is, if the filter is blocking the airflow and the compressor can't get the air that it needs, it will start to draw engine oil from the seal into the intake system and this is obviously going to destroy the motor at some point in time.
1:52 Another concern is low-quality air filters - filters that either allow too much dust and particulates in, or don't allow enough airflow through them. So, using good quality products is going to ensure that we do a good job for our customers.
2:08 Another common cause of failure is not cleaning out the air ducting from the filter to the compressor. Wherever possible, Terrain Tamer uses the Garrett turbochargers in their kit and Garrett has advised that they do see turbochargers failing from overspeeding and this can happen for two reasons. One is where the intake ducting post compressor has got a crack in it or failed. This can mean that the ECU then needs to turn up the turbocharger boost so that it can compensate for the leakage and this puts the turbocharger into an overspeed situation. When this happens, the turbine and compressor wheel veins are subjected to excess stress. Now, they may not fail in that given moment, but some period of time after the repair has been made, we may see the turbocharger fail due to that initial overspeeding event. Another area that can cause overspeeding is this little filter or accumulator in the line that goes to the manifold air pressure sensor. When that gets blocked, it gives an incorrect reading to the MAP and therefore, the ECU can again send the turbocharger into an overspeed scenario and we don't want that to happen. So, Terrain Tamer makes sure that they supply a new filter in their kit.
3:29 When our customers put aftermarket tunes into their engine and these tunes may or may not be carrying the correct fuel-to-air ratio, we can see a turbine housing that gets overheated, cracked, and warped. So, ensuring that the vehicle that we're repairing has an appropriate tune in it is going to be important to the longevity of the turbocharger. Garrett advises that one of the biggest killers of turbochargers is contaminated engine oil; therefore, their recommendation is that we shorten the oil change intervals from the standard manufacturer's procedure down to around about the eight-to-ten-thousand-kilometre interval and that will ensure that we get maximum life out of the turbocharger. They also suggest that turbochargers should be considered as a serviceable item and not considered as an item that will last their life of the engine on the vehicle.
4:21 The Terrain Tamer kit is going to be a direct bolt-in replacement for whatever vehicle that you're working, on so check it out at their website. I'm Mad Matt, stay safe on the trails.
